What makes the theatre of Byllis special?

It is one of the largest ancient theatres in Albania, built in the mid-3rd century BC with a capacity for thousands of spectators.

The theatre was constructed into the natural slope of the hill and served as a venue for both performances and political assemblies of the Byllines tribe. Much of the lower seating remains visible today, offering a clear view of the Vjosa River valley below.

Where are the mosaics located in Byllis?

The mosaics are found within the floors of the complex Paleo-Christian basilicas, particularly Basilica B.

These mosaics date mainly from the 5th to 6th centuries AD and feature intricate designs including animals, plants, and geometric patterns. To protect them from weathering, some sections are covered with sand or protective layers, so visibility can vary depending on recent restoration work.

How do you get to Byllis from Fier?

Byllis lies southeast of Fier, around 50 minutes away by car, with access via Hekal and an alternative route through Ballsh.

The road is paved but becomes narrow and steep as it approaches the site. While some local minibuses (furgons) run to Hekal, renting a car or hiring a taxi from Fier is the most reliable way to reach the plateau.

When is the best time to visit and what is the cost?

The site is best visited during spring or autumn for mild weather, and entry costs around 300–400 Lek for group or individual adult tickets, with concessions available.

There is little shade on the plateau, so summer visits should be planned for early morning. The park opens daily in summer but closes on Mondays in winter; check locally for seasonal opening hours. Facilities are limited, with parking and a small restaurant reported at the site.
