What is the history of Drisht Castle?
Drisht, known anciently as Drivastum, was a major fortified town during the Middle Ages.
The castle has been controlled by various powers, including the Byzantine Empire, the Serbian Kingdom, and the Republic of Venice. It reached its peak during the 14th and 15th centuries before falling to the Ottomans in 1478. Today, visitors can see the remains of the defensive walls and eleven towers.
What can you see at the Drisht site?
The site features medieval stone walls, ruins of an old mosque, and active village dwellings.
Unlike many abandoned ruins, Drisht is an 'inhabited' castle. While the upper fortifications are largely in ruins, the surrounding village maintains traditional stone houses. The site offers panoramic views of the Cukali mountains and the Kir River below.
