Check mountain conditions →Do you need a 4x4 to reach Theth?
Not anymore on the main road from Shkodër. Older blogs describe a gravel track that has since been paved.
Side tracks, like the road onward to some villages, can still be rough. Ask your guesthouse about the last stretch to your door.
Is the Theth road open in winter?
It can close or need chains after snowfall on the pass, usually between December and March.
Check the weather before you go and ask your host. Don't rely on a car without winter tyres.
When is the Theth–Valbona pass open for hiking?
Usually from late May or June until October; snow can linger in the high section early in the season.
The hike is about 6–8 hours. Most people combine it with the Komani Lake ferry on the Valbona side.
Where can I leave my luggage?
Many Shkodër hostels and guesthouses store bags for hikers doing the loop; ask when you book.
