What is the Byzantine Forum in Durrës?

The Byzantine Forum, or Macellum, is a circular open-air plaza dating to the reign of Emperor Anastasius I (491–518 AD).

This site features a paved courtyard surrounded by Corinthian columns and was originally used as a public marketplace. It highlights the architectural significance of Durrës during the Byzantine era when the city served as a key port for the empire.

Can you enter the Venetian Tower?

The tower houses a heritage interpretation centre with multimedia exhibits, and visitors can also access the rooftop.

Built by the Venetians in the 15th century on the site of earlier Byzantine fortifications, the tower formed part of the city's defensive walls. From the top, you can see panoramic views of the modern port and the Adriatic Sea.

How much does it cost to visit these sites?

The Byzantine Forum is an open archaeological site that is generally free to view from the street or perimeter.

Viewing the Venetian Tower from outside is free, but entry to its heritage interpretation centre and rooftop requires a ticket. Adult admission is reported at around 600 lek; confirm the current price locally.

When is the best time to visit?

Early morning or late afternoon is best to avoid the heat and the crowds from cruise ships.

The Forum and the tower rooftop are outdoors, so summer midday visits can be hot; the tower also has indoor exhibits. The Venetian Tower offers views over the harbour, but check opening hours before planning a sunset visit.

Where are the monuments located?

Both sites are situated in the historical centre of Durrës, within easy walking distance of the port.

The Forum is located near the City Hall (Bashkia), while the Tower stands at the entrance to the city from the waterfront. You can explore these as part of a loop that includes the Archaeological Museum.
