Where is the parking for Gjipe Beach?

The official parking lot is located at the end of the paved access road near St. Theodore's Monastery, roughly 1.5 kilometers uphill from the beach.

The asphalt road leading to the parking area turns off the main SH8 coastal road between Dhermi and Ilias. The access road is paved and suitable for all standard two-wheel-drive vehicles up to the parking barriers.

Parking is staffed during the warmer months (May through October). Expect to pay 200 to 300 ALL (€2 to €3) for day parking, or up to 500 ALL (€5) if leaving a vehicle overnight for camping. Facilities at the lot are minimal, usually limited to a small drink stall.

How long is the hike down to Gjipe Beach?

The walk from the designated car park down to Gjipe Beach takes approximately 25 to 35 minutes depending on your pace.

The trail is an unpaved, graded earth and rock track that runs along the cliff edge before dropping into the canyon mouth. The surface features loose gravel, sharp limestone rocks, and red dust. Flip-flops are not recommended; wear closed-toe shoes or trail sandals.

The return hike uphill takes roughly 35 to 45 minutes and is completely exposed to the sun. In midsummer, temperatures on this path often exceed 35°C (95°F). Carry at least one liter of drinking water per person for the return walk, as there is no shade along the track.

Can you drive directly to Gjipe Beach?

You can drive directly to the beach only if you have a true 4x4 vehicle with high ground clearance and low-range gearing.

The track below the parking lot is extremely rough. It contains deep ruts, exposed bedrock ledges, and loose stone steps that will ground out standard cars and compact crossovers. Standard car rental agreements in Albania void insurance coverage on this specific route.

Local drivers occasionally wait near the upper car park with modified off-road vehicles to shuttle visitors up and down for a cash fee, usually charging between 1,000 and 1,500 ALL (€10 to €15) per person each way.

How do you take a boat to Gjipe Beach?

Small motorboats and water taxis travel to Gjipe Beach from Jale Beach and Himara between late May and September.

The shortest boat transfer is from nearby Jale Beach, taking roughly 10 to 15 minutes. Boat captains operate directly from the sand or jetties in Jale; you can negotiate a departure time and arrange a return pickup later in the afternoon.

Prices vary by operator and fuel costs, but a return transfer from Jale typically runs 1,500 to 2,500 ALL (€15 to €25) per passenger. Speedboat tours from Himara town take 25 to 35 minutes and often include Gjipe as part of a multi-cave day trip for €25 to €40 per person.
