Is Franz Joseph Island accessible?

Franz Joseph Island has disappeared through erosion and should no longer be treated as a visitable island.

The former island once attracted visitors by boat and supported woodland where herons and other birds nested. Erosion gradually destroyed it, so older descriptions of island visits no longer reflect conditions at the river mouth.

Visitors are advised to respect the natural habitat and avoid leaving any waste around the estuary.
