Is tap water safe to drink in Tirana?

Tirana's water is treated, but most residents don't drink it straight from the tap. Bottled or filtered water is the safe, normal choice.

The taste is often strongly chlorinated. A 1.5-litre bottle costs roughly 50–100 lek in a supermarket.

What about Sarandë, Ksamil, Durrës and the coast?

Drink bottled water on the coast. Supply is under pressure in summer and quality can differ from building to building.

Large 5–6 litre bottles are the cheapest option for apartment stays.

Can I drink spring water in the mountains?

In villages like Theth and Valbona, many springs are clean and locals drink them — but ask your guesthouse before filling up.

Avoid water in agricultural lowland villages. A filter bottle is a good idea for hikers.

Is ice and brushing teeth safe?

Yes. Restaurants and bars use commercial ice, and brushing teeth with tap water is fine for most travellers.

If you have a sensitive stomach, use bottled water for teeth too for the first days.
