How to visit Lezhë Castle and Lissus
- Travel to the city of Lezhë, around 60 kilometres north of Tirana by road.
- Follow the signs from the city centre leading up the steep paved road towards the hill summit.
- Pay the small entry fee at the gatehouse near the top of the hill.
- Explore the internal ruins and walk the perimeter walls for panoramic views.
What is the history of Lissus and Lezhë Castle?
Originally an Illyrian stronghold founded in the 4th century BC, it became the Roman city of Lissus and later a medieval fortress.
The city is historically significant as the place where Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg united Albanian princes against the Ottoman Empire in 1444, at St. Nicholas Church below the castle. The visible structures today are largely a mix of Venetian and Ottoman architecture built upon ancient Illyrian and Roman blocks.
What can you see at the site today?
Visitors can see the massive 'Cyclopean' Illyrian walls, the remains of an Ottoman mosque, and various water cisterns.
The castle grounds offer a clear view of the surrounding plains and the Adriatic Sea. Inside the walls, you will find the ruins of different periods, including an Ottoman mosque, the remains of a medieval church, and former garrison buildings.
How do you get to Lezhë Castle?
The castle is accessible by car or a steep 20-30 minute walk from the Lezhë city centre.
Most visitors arrive via the SH1 highway from Tirana or Shkodër. While the road to the castle is paved, it is narrow and steep; those walking should be prepared for a significant incline, especially during the summer heat.
What are the entry costs and practical tips?
Entry to the castle is inexpensive, typically costing a few hundred Lek, and opening hours should be checked locally before visiting.

Is the Memorial of Skanderbeg part of the castle?
No, the Memorial of Skanderbeg is located in the city centre below the hill, not within the castle walls.
While often visited together, the Memorial (built over the ruins of St. Nicholas Church where Skanderbeg is buried) is a separate site located near the base of the hill. It is recommended to visit both to fully understand the region's history.
