How to visit Spile and Potami

  1. Travel to Himarë via the SH8 coastal road by bus or car from Vlorë or Sarandë.
  2. Access Spile directly from the pedestrian promenade in the town centre.
  3. Walk south along the coastal road past Prinos, allowing around 20–25 minutes from Spile to reach Potami Beach.
  4. Choose a public area to lay a towel or rent a sunbed from a local provider.

What is the difference between Spile and Potami?

Spile is the busy central hub for dining and transport, whereas Potami is more spacious and has water influenced by natural springs.

Spile Beach is the heart of Himarë, lined with restaurants and shops. It is ideal for those who want quick access to services but can become crowded during July and August. The seabed is mostly pebbles and sand. Potami, located just past the southern rocks of the bay, is significantly larger. Natural springs discharge into the sea around Potami, creating cooler patches of water.

How do you get to Himarë?

Himarë is accessible via the SH8 highway, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by car from either Vlorë or Sarandë; buses from Vlorë can take around 2.5 hours.

Daily buses and furgons (minibuses) run between Tirana, Vlorë, and Sarandë, with stops in Himarë that vary by operator; confirm your arrival point when booking. If driving from the north, the Llogara Tunnel bypasses the mountain pass, though the coastal road still has winding sections.

What facilities are available at these beaches?

Both beaches offer sunbed rentals, showers, and proximity to numerous cafes and tavernas.

When is the best time to visit?

The ideal time to visit is from June to September when the weather is warm and seasonal facilities generally operate, though some close during September.

July and August are peak months with the highest temperatures and largest crowds. For a quieter experience with manageable heat, consider visiting in June or September when the water remains warm enough for swimming.

Are Spile and Potami beaches free?

Yes, both beaches have large public areas where you can sit for free, alongside private sectors with paid amenities.

While much of the shoreline is occupied by sunbeds for rent, Albanian law requires sections of the beach to remain free for public use. Expect to pay roughly 1000 to 2000 Lek for a set of two beds and an umbrella in the private areas.
