Why do police stop tourists in Albania?

Mostly routine document checks and speed checks with radar guns. Being stopped does not mean you did something wrong.

Checks are frequent on the Tirana–Durrës road, coastal roads and town entrances. Rental cars with foreign or rental-company plates are stopped like any other car.

What documents do I need to show?

Your driving licence, passport or ID, the car's registration document and the rental contract with insurance.

Keep them together in the car. If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet or not from the EU, carry an International Driving Permit as well. Rental companies should leave the registration in the car — check the glove box before you drive off.

How do I pay a traffic fine in Albania?

The officer writes an official ticket. You pay it afterwards at a bank or post office, using the details on the ticket.

Keep the receipt. If you are driving a rental car, tell the rental company — unpaid fines are often charged to your card later.

What if an officer asks for cash?

Stay polite and ask for the official written ticket so you can pay at the bank. Do not offer money.

Offering or paying a bribe is a crime for both sides. Most stops end with a quick check and a wave. If you feel something was wrong, note the time, place and officer number and report it on 129 (State Police) or at a police station.

What are the main rules police check?
