Compare bus journey times →Why are Albanian drive times longer than Google Maps says?
Many routes are two-lane mountain roads through towns, with trucks, roundabouts and sudden slowdowns. Summer traffic near the coast is heavy.
Google's estimate assumes steady speed. In practice you'll also stop for fuel, food and views.
How long are the main drives really?
Use these realistic ranges for planning in normal conditions; add more in peak summer.
| Route | Realistic time |
|---|---|
| Tirana → Berat | 2–2.5 h |
| Tirana → Shkodër | 1.5–2 h |
| Shkodër → Theth | 2–2.5 h |
| Berat → Gjirokastër | 3–3.5 h |
| Gjirokastër → Sarandë | 1–1.5 h |
| Tirana → Sarandë | 4.5–6 h |
| Vlorë → Himarë (via Llogara) | 1.5–2 h |
Can I do Berat and Gjirokastër in one day?
Not comfortably. Each town needs at least half a day and the drive between them is about 3 hours.
Spend a night in each, or pick one if you're short on time.
Is it safe to drive at night in Albania?
Main roads are fine with care, but mountain roads can be dark, narrow and have animals or unlit vehicles. Try to arrive before dark.
