How to reach Kardhiq Castle
- Travel from Gjirokastër towards Tepelena on the SH4 highway.
- Take the turn-off towards the village of Kardhiq (the Kardhiq–Delvinë road leads toward the Skërficë tunnel, opened in 2022).
- Follow the local road to the village of Kardhiq, where the ruins sit on a prominent hilltop.
- Park near the village center and hike the short, steep trail leading up to the castle walls.
What is the history of Kardhiq Castle?
The castle is associated with Ali Pasha, who restored it in the early 19th century and massacred captives from Kardhiq in 1812.
The original fortress dates back further, but its most significant historical moment occurred during the reign of Ali Pasha of Tepelena. Following a long-standing feud involving his family, Ali Pasha captured the settlement and ordered a massacre of hundreds of its men. The town was devastated, but the fortress was rebuilt. Today, the ruins serve as a somber monument to this period of Ottoman-Albanian history.
What can you see at the ruins today?
Visitors can see the remaining perimeter walls, foundations of interior buildings, and the surrounding mountain scenery.
While much of the upper structure is gone, the footprint of the fortress is still clearly visible on the rocky outcrop. The site provides broad views of the Kardhiq valley and surrounding mountains, offering opportunities for photography after the climb. Expect ruined walls and a surviving tower rather than furnished interiors; current information-board provision is not confirmed.
Is there an entrance fee or specific opening hours?
Kardhiq Castle is an open site with no entrance fee or restricted opening hours.
Because the ruins are not a formal museum, you can visit at any time during daylight hours. Do not rely on on-site assistance; visitors should be self-sufficient regarding water and supplies. It is recommended to visit during the day to safely navigate the uneven terrain.

When is the best time to visit Kardhiq Castle?
The best time to visit is during spring or autumn when the weather is mild for hiking.
Summer temperatures in the Gjirokastër region can exceed 35°C, making the exposed climb to the ruins difficult during midday. Spring offers lush greenery in the valley, while autumn brings cooler air but increasing rainfall. If visiting in winter, be prepared for potential mud on the trail following rain.
