How to reach Himarë Old Castle
- Drive or take a local taxi north from Himarë town centre toward the village of Himarë Fshat.
- Park near the entrance of the old village or follow the signposted walking trail from the coastal road.
- Ascend the steep stone paths through the residential area to reach the highest point of the fortifications.
What is the history of Himarë Old Castle?
The fortified settlement dates back over 2,000 years, serving as a stronghold for the Chaonian Epirote tribes and later the Byzantines.
Excavations have uncovered Late Bronze Age material, though continuous occupation since then is not established. The surviving structures span several periods, including ancient fortifications, medieval churches and many stone houses from the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It remains a rare example of a 'living castle,' where modern residents still live among ancient ruins.
What are the highlights to see inside the Kastro?
Visitors should look for the Church of Saint Sergius and Bacchus and the remnants of the ancient cyclopean walls.
The Church of Saint Sergius and Bacchus is one of the most significant religious sites, retaining some original frescoes. The layout of the village offers narrow cobblestone alleys and traditional stone architecture, culminating in a viewpoint that overlooks Livadhi Beach and the town below.
When is the best time to visit Himarë Old Castle?
Late afternoon or early morning is ideal to avoid the midday heat and to see the sunset over the Ionian Sea.
Published visiting hours are daily 09:00–19:00 in summer; outside summer, Tuesday–Saturday 09:00–16:00 and Sunday 09:00–14:00, with Mondays closed. During summer months, the steep climb is best tackled when temperatures are lower. The golden hour provides the best lighting for photography of the stone ruins and the coastline.
Is there an entry fee or facilities at the castle?
Budget around 300 lek for entry, although collection can vary. An information kiosk is reported near the parking area; check locally for restroom availability.
