How to visit the Sarandë synagogue ruins
- Walk to the centre of Sarandë near the City Hall and the main park.
- Locate the fenced archaeological excavation site situated between Rruga Onhezmi and Rruga Skënderbeu.
- View the foundations from the surrounding pedestrian walkway; the mosaics are usually covered.
What is the historical significance of the site?
The site contains the remains of a 5th-century synagogue that was later converted into a Christian basilica.
Archaeologists have identified five phases of occupation, including two phases of synagogue use. The original Jewish community centre and synagogue featured mosaics depicting a menorah, shofar, and etrog. In the 6th century, the synagogue was adapted into a church. The cause of the complex’s eventual destruction remains uncertain. Today, it stands as one of the few tangible links to the ancient Jewish presence in the Balkans and provides insight into the religious transitions of the late Roman and early Byzantine periods.
Where are the Sarandë synagogue ruins located?
The ruins are located in the heart of Sarandë, adjacent to the main town square and the municipal building.
Because of their central location, the ruins are easily accessible on foot from the Sarandë promenade. The site is an open-air excavation pit surrounded by railings, making it visible to passersby at any time of day.
What can you see at the site today?
Visitors can see the stone foundations and various rooms, but the mosaic flooring is normally covered for protection.
The most notable features are the stone walls defining different rooms of the complex. While many of the delicate mosaics are covered with sand for preservation against the elements, portions are occasionally visible or shown via onsite information boards.
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Mosaic Imagery | Menorah, shofar, and various geometric patterns |
| Structure | Multiple rooms including a prayer hall and cistern |
| Access | Public viewing from street level |
Is there an entry fee or specific opening hours?
There is no entry fee to view the ruins, and they are visible 24 hours a day.
Street-level viewing does not require entry, but access inside the fenced site may depend on whether its gates are open. It is best visited during daylight hours to see the architectural details clearly.
When is the best time to visit?
Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures for walking through central Sarandë.
During the summer months, the site can be very hot as there is little shade. Early morning or late afternoon visits are recommended during July and August to avoid the peak heat.
