Leave it in Shkodër, send it round by road, or put it on a horse.
| Option | How it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Leave in Shkodër | Your hostel/guesthouse stores it; you return via the Komani ferry loop | Most hikers – cheapest |
| Road transfer | Guesthouse or minibus operator drives the bag to the other side | Travellers not returning to Shkodër |
| Pack horse | Arrange through your Theth or Valbona guesthouse the day before | Families, heavy packs |
What does it cost?
Prices change every season, so ask your guesthouse when you book.
Storage in Shkodër is often free for guests. Road transfers and horses are priced per bag or per animal; agree the price and the drop-off point in advance and keep the guesthouse phone number.
What to carry on the day
A daypack of 20–30 litres is enough.
Carry 1.5–2 litres of water (there are springs and cafés on the trail in season), snacks, a rain jacket, a warm layer for the pass, sun protection, cash in lek and a charged phone with offline maps.
Which direction is better?
Both are fine; Valbona → Theth has a gentler climb for many walkers, Theth → Valbona is the more common start.
Pick the direction that fits your transport: the Komani ferry runs on the Valbona side, the road to Shkodër on the Theth side.
Can I hike Theth to Valbona with a big backpack?
You can, but the climb to the pass is steep. Most people store the big bag in Shkodër or send it by road.
Do guesthouses store bags?
Many do for guests, especially in Shkodër. Ask when you book.
